"Manual Therapy: state of the art"

In times of European crisis and the need for a more efficiënt healthcare (and thus more economic savings), ECT 2012 wants to highlight the relevance and benifits of the manual therapist and his treatment. The most recent evidence based studies in relationship to manual therapy will be presented.

Keynote-speakers:

Arianne Verhagen (the Netherlands)

She is physical and manual therapist. She promoted at the Dept. of epidemiology at the Maastricht University. She now works as a lecturer at Avans Hogeschool (Breda) and she is senior researcher at the department of family medicine at the Erasmus MC (Rotterdam).

Lieven Danneels (Belgium)

He promoted in 2001 as doctor in Motor rehabilitation and physiotherapy at the University of Ghent with “Evaluation and Rehabilitation of Functional Lumbopelvic Stability”. Since 2003 he is full-time lecturer at UGent, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and physiotherapy. His interest domain is the musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Both his clinical expertise and research domain are situated within the rehabilitation of the low back. He has more than 80 international and national publications and he obtained several scientific awards.
Gerbrand Groen (the Netherlands)
He graduated as a medical doctor at the University of Amsterdam. He worked at the Dept. of Anatomy & Embryology as junior, later as senior lecturer. His PhD thesis was on 'Contributions to the Anatomy of the Peripheral Autonomic Nervous System' (1986). In 1989 he was appointed Assoc. Professor at the Dept. of Functional Anatomy, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Early 1998 he was appointed as Assoc. Professor, Division of Perioperative Medicine, Anesthesiology and Pain treatment, University Medical Centre (UMC) Utrecht. Attention is focused upon determination of diagnostic parameters, efficacy of existing -up to now generally invasive- therapies for chronic spine and sacroiliac joint-related pain. He is very active in postgraduate education programs, has organized and participated in many hands-on workshops.

René Castien (the Netherlands)

Graduate in physiotherapy and manual therapy. He works in a healthcare centre and is part-time tutor at the SOMT, Amersfoort. After his Master degree he started a randomized clinical trial and cohort study for his PhD project, under supervision of prof dr. Daniëlle van der Windt (Keele University, UK) and prof. Dr. Joost Dekker ( VUMC, Amsterdam). This PhD –project will be presented.

Sidney Rubinstein (the Netherlands)

Senior Researcher, EMGO+-Institute for Health and Care Research VU University, Amsterdam. Sidney currently works as a senior researcher at the EMGO+-Institute for Health and Care Research, VU University medical center, Amsterdam. He is Associate Editor for the Cochrane Back Review Group and involved in various systematic reviews. His most recent work has focused on the effectiveness of various interventions for chronic low-back pain, and invasive procedures for neck pain. He supervises 2 PhD students as well as MSc students. He has publications in the Cochrane Library, Spine, European Spine Journal, Stroke, and JMPT, among others. He also works 30+ hours in private practice as a chiropractor.

Gert Bronfort (USA)

He was a practicing chiropractor in Denmark for nearly 20 years. He moved to the USA and have led more than 10 randomized clinical trials for low back, neck and headache conditions. He has authored several systematic reviews of the literature and he’s Associate Editor for the Cochrane Back Review group. He also have the privilege of serving on the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Alan Taylor (UK)

Lecturer, researcher and writer of over 20 peer reviewed articles in a number of fields relating to physiotherapy. Over 9 years of teaching postgraduate clinical courses for Altered Haemodynamics and Manual Therapy, Vertebrobasilar Insufficiency, Cervical Arterial Dysfunction (CAD), and Sports Medicine; - all topics related to altered haemodynamics and clinical reasoning. Devised and taught over 100 one-day and two-day courses in these areas. Presented as guest speaker at numerous courses and conferences in the UK and Worldwide since 2002. Visiting lecturer in clinical reasoning and haemodynamics at MMU and the University of Hertfordshire. Works as expert witness in the field of medical negligence related to altered haemodynamics and Cervical Arterial Dysfunctions.

Sylvie Tack (Belgium)

She graduated in law with great distinction (University of Ghent) in 2004. Later, in 2006, she became master in medical sciences with great distinction (University of Ghent) and worked as scientific employee at Ghent University (Department of criminal law and Criminology), lawyer at the desk in Leuven under Filip Dewallens (& Partners), voluntary collaborator University of Antwerp (Department of civil law). In 2008 she graduated as Doctor in law. In 2010 she started at the desk in Bruges. Her experience lies in following matters: Medical law : legislation patients ' rights (information, consent, access, representation, professional secrecy and privacy protection), abortion, end of life, medical records, organ transplantation / Medical liability law : civil and criminal proceedings for alleged medical mistakes of caregivers or care institutions / Legislation in connection with the exercise of health professions : accreditation, professional title, statute / Disease insurance : nomenclature, disputes with the RIZIV

Jilles Heringa (the Netherlands)

He is attorney health law at Wybenga lawyers, Rotterdam. He is specialized in medical liability law: civil and criminal proccedings for alleged medical mistakes of caregivers. He has a particular interest for the interaction between law and communication. After his studies Dutch language and Dutch law he followed a postgraduate course 'European law' at the Europa College in Bruges, Belgium. From 2003 till 2007 he was attorney in the Hague and Brussels. He build up experiene in a political-administrative context as press officer of the Minister of Finance Bos during the financial crisis and later as manager at the Ministry of justice.
